International Assocative Governance

The International Associative Governance

The MSF movement consists of 26 national or regional Associations united in their commitment to the MSF Charter and its principles.

MSF’s highest governance body is the International General Assembly (IGA). The IGA meets annually and consists of two representatives from each Association (including the Movement-Wide Association) and the International President, whom these representatives elect.  The IGA is tasked with safeguarding MSF’s medical and humanitarian mission and providing strategic direction to the MSF movement. The IGA delegates duties to the International Board (IB), which ensures the implementation of its decisions, the follow-up of and with the Executive, and may resolve problems and conflicts within the Movement.

The International Board

The International Board (IB) acts on behalf of, and is accountable to, the International General Assembly (IGA). As the highest associative governance body of MSF, the Assembly delegates duties to the Board.

The IB can be prescriptive but it is intended to have mainly a guiding role, ensuring accountability and facilitating agreement within the movement.

The International Board is currently composed of 12 voting members plus a non-voting treasurer and a non-voting secretary:

  • The International President
  • Five representatives appointed by each of the five MSF Operational Centres
  • Six members elected by the International General Assembly (IGA)
